Deadlines To Register

In order to vote using a regular ballot in an election, you must register prior to the following deadlines:

  • General - 22 Days before election

  • Primary - 22 Days before election

  • Special - 14 Days before election

  • Special (Called by the Governor) - 7 Days before election

Same Day Voter Registration

Starting with the 2022, Virginia voters have been able to do what is called Same Day Voter Registration. Per the Virginia Department of Elections, Same day registration refers to the ability to register to vote in-person and immediately vote a provisional ballot after the deadline to register and vote a non-provisional ballot has passed. Provisional ballots are used by voters who do not appear on the list of registeredvoters at their polling location. Provisional ballots are not processed by a vote counting machine at the time of voting, but rather are subject to approval by the local electoral board prior to the ballot being counted.

This means that up until Election Day, you can register to vote and complete a ballot that will be counted so long as your application to register to vote is approved. For further information, click here to visit the Virginia Department of Elections page on Same Day Voter Registration.
